Are you considering immigration to Canada?
The Federal Skilled Worker Program could be the ideal choice for you! This program targets individuals with skills and experience that can contribute to the Canadian economy. In this guide, we'll explore program eligibility, application procedures, and the necessary steps for preparation.
What is Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry?
The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) operates under Canada's Express Entry immigration programs, commenced on January 1, 2015. Tailored for skilled workers in demand, it is part of the broader Express Entry system—an online platform overseeing permanent residence applications from skilled individuals. Eligibility for the Express Entry pool is contingent on meeting the requirements of one of the programs managed by Express Entry.
Within this system, you receive a score based on various human capital factors, including age, education level, work experience, English language proficiency, and, if applicable, your spouse or common-law partner's human capital factors. Additional points can be obtained for factors like having a sibling in Canada, possessing a valid job offer, or having studied in the country.
Upon entering the Express Entry pool, candidates are ranked against each other, with the highest-ranked individuals receiving invitations to apply for permanent residence.
To file an Express Entry application, a minimum score of 67 out of 100 points on the FSWP grid is required.
The FSW program, as the initial skilled immigrant program within Express Entry, accommodates skilled workers aspiring to settle in any province or territory in Canada, excluding Quebec.
From 2022 to 2024, Canada has outlined ambitious plans to welcome over 1.5 million new permanent immigrants. The Canada Immigration Level Plan for 2023-25, spearheaded by Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, establishes these unprecedented targets.
Back in November 2022, when Canada released its Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025, it was seen that PNP admission targets had exceeded Express Entry targets as the top economic immigration pathway.
Last year, 11 PNPs across Canada invited 83,500 new permanent residents in Canada. The 2023-2025 plan also showed that IRCC's PNP targets were projected to increase to 105,000 in 2023. Then, targets for 2024 and 2025 were set at 110,000 and 117,500, respectively.
According to the latest Canada Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026 released on November 01, 2023, Express Entry is set to regain the top spot among economic immigration pathways in Canada. But, this is only expected to be the case in 2024. As per the current admission targets, Canada PNPs are projected to be the top economic immigration pathways for 2025 and 2026.

Benefits of the Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Free medical benefits: Canadian permanent resident visa holders enjoy access to the universal healthcare facilities provided by the Canadian government. Medical care, including all prescribed medications, is covered at no cost for individuals with Canadian PR status, funded through taxes.
- Free education for children: Permanent residency holders in Canada receive complimentary education up to the 12th grade, extending until the age of 18. Additionally, Canadian PR holders benefit from substantially reduced fees for higher education compared to international students.
- Right to Live and Work in Canada: Canada is ranked as the second-best country in the world to live and work. It is one of the top destinations for overall sustainability, cultural influence, economic influence, entrepreneurship, and primarily for the quality of life. Once you get a PR, you have the right to move to any territory or province in Canada. You don’t have to stick with an employer, job, or even a province.
- Social Security Benefits: Upon obtaining a Confirmation of Permanent Residency (COPR), a nine-digit SIN (Social Insurance Number) is issued. This unique identifier is employed by government agencies for identification purposes. It becomes essential for various activities, including tax payments and accessing government programs like Employment Insurance (EI) and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Individuals aged 12 or older, including citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents in Canada, can apply for their own SIN.
- Family sponsorship: Accompanying the advantages of Canadian PR is the opportunity to reside with your family in Canada. Upon becoming a permanent resident, you can sponsor your spouse or common-law partner, as well as dependent children, to join you. If you apply for PR under the Express Entry category, you can include your family in your application. Once your partner and child receive their PR Visa, they are entitled to the same privileges as Canadian Permanent Residents.
- High quality of living standards: Canada stands as a dynamic nation characterized by a thriving economy, rich cultural diversity, and breathtaking geographical landscapes. It is a secure and welcoming home for residents, and those with permanent residence status benefit from the rights safeguarded by the government and authorities under Canadian Charter 6. The Canadian experience encompasses high wages, a top-tier education and healthcare system, and a contemporary, secular lifestyle.
- Canadian Citizenship: After securing permanent resident status, you have the privilege to reside in Canada for a period of five years. As a PR holder, you become eligible for Canadian citizenship if you have physically lived in the country for 1,095 days (three years) within that five-year timeframe. It's crucial to note that only the five years leading up to the date of your citizenship application are considered valid for this calculation.

Before you apply - important things to consider
As you prepare your application, consider the following:
- Express Entry functions as a selection system, not an immigration program, utilized by the Government of Canada to identify candidates for immigration.
- To receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence, you must fulfill the criteria for one of the programs that utilize Express Entry.
- You are allowed to submit only one profile at a time. The submission of a new profile is contingent upon the decision or expiration of your previous profile.
- If found ineligible for the applied program, your profile will be removed from the Express Entry pool.
- There is no avenue for appealing a decision that does not result in an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
- It is crucial to comprehend the requirements of the programs and ensure you meet all criteria before submitting your profile.
